I got stuck in a ditch when I was driving in the snow down lonesome miles of logging roads for the first time

There was nothing that moved about a million miles around except what burrowed underground and coyotes and the sunshine that streamed thru the trees as I shoveled myself out jubilantly

see my breath making blue puffs of steam

I was like an explorer, my ship locked in the ice.


I have seldom felt so all alone as when I thought that we were done,
outside Burrard Skytrain station I set my suitcase on the ground
the sidewalk was not empty but a great expanse of space pressed hard against me like a ship locked in the ice
The sea as deep, the winter just as cold
The snow as thick where it fell on either pole
Still the chill of an icy wind that blows
my heart a boat bound at the bottom of the world

I got stuck in the space between open sea and land, all that hazy indistinction before the ice freezes again
Am I alone now?
